How do I get my runs out of Garmin, Strava or my watch and onto a map?

Pick where your runs live. Each takes three steps, and your files are read in this browser, never uploaded.

GarminEvery activity you have recorded, from the bulk export.
  1. On a computer, open Garmin's Data Management page, sign in, select Export Your Data, then Request Data Export.
  2. Garmin emails you a download link, usually within 48 hours; meanwhile, start with the recent runs on your watch (Watch over USB).
  3. Download the ZIP and drop it on the map as it is, without unzipping it.
Details

The link can take up to 30 days. The ZIP holds every activity you have recorded, as FIT files inside its DI_CONNECT folder; Ground Covered finds them at any depth and skips the health and profile data.

The reminder is a calendar file for two days from now. It opens in Apple Calendar and Outlook; Google Calendar imports it on a computer (Settings, then Import & export).

For one activity: on connect.garmin.com, open it, select the gear icon at the top right, then Export File.

StravaActivities from any device you synced to Strava.
  1. On the Strava website (the app cannot do this), hover over your name, then select Settings and My Account.
  2. Under Download your account, select Get Started, then Request download.
  3. Strava emails a link, usually within a few hours: download the ZIP and drop it on the map as it is.
Details

The archive's activities folder holds FIT, GPX and TCX files, some of them gzipped (.gz); Ground Covered reads them all.

Watch over USBRecent runs, straight from the watch's Activity folder.
  1. Plug the watch into a computer with its USB cable.
  2. Open the watch's Garmin folder, then Activity: on Windows from This PC in File Explorer, on a Mac from Finder.
  3. Drag the Activity folder onto the map, or pick it with Add activities, then Choose a folder.

A watch keeps only recent runs; the Garmin export brings your whole history.

Many recent watches, and every watch with music, connect over MTP and do not show up as a drive:

  • Windows: the watch appears under This PC; open it, copy its Garmin, Activity folder to your desktop, then drop that copy.
  • Mac: Garmin says these watches need a Windows computer; otherwise let the watch sync to Garmin Connect and use the Garmin export.
  • Linux: GNOME Files (with gvfs-mtp) and KDE Dolphin (with kio-extras) show the watch; copy the Activity folder out, then drop it.

From your phoneAny of these exports, opened on your phone.
  1. Download your Garmin or Strava export ZIP on the phone, from the email's link.
  2. Open Ground Covered in the phone's browser, select Add activities, then Choose files, and pick the ZIP itself.
  3. Keep the page open with the screen on until the import summary appears.
Details

On an iPhone the ZIP is in the Files app: Browse, iCloud Drive, Downloads. Do not tap it there first: that expands it into a folder. On Android it is in the Files app.

A large export takes a few minutes on a phone.
